Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) treats great saphenous vein incompetence. This is usually the underlying cause of symptomatic varicose veins. Unlike surgical removal, EVLT permanently closes the vein without removing it. EVLT uses heat energy delivered by a thin catheter or fiber threaded into the saphenous vein. The heat induces a reaction in the vein wall, causing the vein to seal.
The varicose veins disappear as blood flow from the lower leg reroutes into other normal veins.
EVLT is performed using local anesthesia. A mild sedative can be administered orally or intravenously if desired. As only a slim sheath needs to be placed into the vein, the entire procedure is performed via a tiny skin nick minimizing post operative scarring.
Pressure is applied to the treated vein using graduated compression hosiery (support stockings). These are usually prescribed for 3 to 4 weeks following EVLT. The hosiery is available in many sizes, styles and colors.
Recovery from EVLT is rapid as there are no large surgical incisions or side effects of general anesthesia. Normal activities, including driving, can be resumed the next day. Patients should walk for at least 30 minutes a day following EVLT. Vigorous physical activity such as weight lifting and aerobics are not advised during this time. |
